Choosing a rug is exciting — but getting the size wrong is one of the most common (and costly) mistakes shoppers make. At WizardOfRugs, we've spent over 20 years helping people find rugs that truly work in their homes, and size is almost always the first conversation we have.
This guide will walk you through exactly how to size a rug for every room, so you can shop with confidence.
The Golden Rule: Go Bigger Than You Think
If there's one piece of advice we'd give every rug buyer, it's this: most people choose a rug that's too small. A rug that's too small makes a room feel disjointed and can actually make the space look smaller. A well-sized rug anchors the furniture, defines the zone, and pulls the whole room together.
Living Room Rugs
The living room is where rug sizing matters most. You have three main options:
- All legs on the rug — the most cohesive look; works best in larger rooms. All main furniture pieces sit fully on the rug.
- Front legs on the rug — the most popular approach; sofas and chairs have just their front legs on the rug, creating a connected feel without needing a huge rug.
- No legs on the rug — only works if the rug is used as a centrepiece in a very large room with furniture pushed to the walls.
Recommended sizes for living rooms:
- Small living room: 160 x 230 cm
- Medium living room: 200 x 290 cm
- Large living room: 240 x 340 cm or larger
💡 Tip: Before you buy, lay out newspaper or masking tape on the floor in the rug's dimensions. It's the easiest way to visualise the size in your actual space.

Bedroom Rugs
In a bedroom, the rug's job is to frame the bed and give you a soft landing when you get up in the morning. There are two popular approaches:
- Under the bed (most popular): Place a large rug so that it extends at least 50–60 cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed. For a king-size bed, this typically means a 200 x 290 cm rug or larger.
- Beside the bed: Use two smaller rugs (or runners) on either side of the bed. This works well in narrower rooms or when you want to show off a beautiful floor.
Recommended sizes for bedrooms:
- Single bed: 120 x 170 cm beside, or 160 x 230 cm under
- Double bed: 160 x 230 cm beside, or 200 x 290 cm under
- King/Super King: 200 x 290 cm or 240 x 340 cm under

Dining Room Rugs
The key rule for dining rooms: the rug must be large enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. A chair pulled back from the table typically moves 45–60 cm, so factor that into your measurements.
How to measure: Measure your dining table, then add at least 60 cm on all sides.
- 4-seater table (e.g. 90 x 150 cm): needs at least a 210 x 270 cm rug
- 6-seater table (e.g. 90 x 180 cm): needs at least a 210 x 300 cm rug

Hallway Runners
Hallways call for runners — long, narrow rugs that protect your floor and add a welcoming first impression. Measure the length of your hallway and choose a runner that leaves a small gap (10–15 cm) at each end and the sides.

Round Rugs
Round rugs work brilliantly in smaller spaces, under round dining tables, or as a design statement in a hallway or reading nook. The same sizing principles apply — measure the diameter of your furniture grouping and add at least 50 cm all around.
